Foundation Stage (Nursery & Pre-Prep)

At The Phoenix School Cambridge, our priority is to provide education tailored to individual needs. We aim to produce happy, motivated children who are eager to learn, with good manners and respect for others.

Foundation children are taught through planned play activities, some of which are adult led and some child led, to ensure children are given opportunities to become independent learners. These activities take place both inside and outside in our beautiful school grounds.

As the children develop reading skills they are introduced to a variety of reading schemes that instill a love of reading and encourage sound comprehension skills. Reception children and the majority of Transition children are heard to read daily.

Numeracy is introduced through practical activities with more formal learning supported by the Abacus Evolve Maths Scheme. This is introduced when appropriate to each individual child’s development.

I.C.T. is used throughout the Foundation Stage to support all areas of the curriculum.

Every Wednesday afternoon (weather permitting) the children participate in the All School Sports Afternoon where they get plenty of fresh air and exercise for their health and well-being, they get to mix with older children and it also provides an opportunity for us to work with them to start to develop their team, negotiation, leadership and sports skills in preparation for their move up to Key Stage 1.

This excellent provision is offered to every child in the Foundation Stage including our pre-school children whether they are full time or part time and rather surprisingly, our fees for this age range are better value than any day nursery! We also offer Early Years Funding and accept Employee Childcare Vouchers from a wide variety of schemes.
