September 2011

12th September 2011

Dear Parents

A very warm welcome to both our existing families and particularly to the new families who have joined us for our second year as The Phoenix School Cambridge.  I hope you will all have an exciting and happy time with us and I look forward to working together to provide our children with a loving and challenging environment in which they can grow and flourish.

One of the most exciting things that has happened over the summer break is the completion of Phase 1 of our building plans and the creation of the new classroom for Years 1 and 2.  If you have not seen it yet please feel free to look around the light, bright and spacious room that has been created.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who helped us by lending their expertise, muscle and energy to make this possible.  The children love their new classroom and have already made plans as to how they are going to use it!

A very warm welcome goes to Mrs Helen Campbell who has joined our team.  Many of you will remember Mrs Campbell from St Colette’s and I am delighted that she will be with us as both a music teacher and to work with the Year 1 and Year 2 classes.  Mrs Campbell is able to offer individual piano, guitar, violin, recorder and voice lessons so please contact her if your child is interested in learning any of these skills.

There is a meeting with teachers this week which provides an opportunity to find out what is going to be taught over the coming year and more about school housekeeping issues.  We will be able to answer any questions that you may have so please join us to find out what is going on and how you can be a part of our school life.  There will also be Parents’ Consultations at the beginning of October when you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher.

Computer Club, Sewing Club and Football Club will begin in earnest next week and details of these are attached.  Please complete the forms and return them to your child’s class teacher along with the remittance.

Lots of new uniform, including school bags, has been delivered and we are now able to dispense equipment without livery relating to a previous school!  Tracey Best has asked me to remind you that she still has plenty of basic uniform such as pinafore dresses and coats should you need any so please let me know your requirements and they will be delivered to you in school.  School water bottles are also available and these are ideal for keeping the children properly hydrated.  Please could you ensure that all items of school clothing and equipment are clearly named.

Mrs Cooke’s daughter Tasha has offered to run a pilates class for parents on Tuesdays starting at 4.30 – 5.30 pm in our school hall.  This will enable the children to go into Barn Owls and have a light tea whilst the body and mind are stretched and relaxed.  The staff will also be able to take part in a second session which will run immediately afterwards so hopefully this should ease and soothe our aging frames!  If you are interested in this please let Mrs Cooke know.

Our Harvest Festival will be on 23rd September and, as last year, we will be supporting our school charity, The Milton Hospice, with whom we have close links.  They have supplied a list of products that they would be pleased to receive which will go some way to helping the children who access their facilities. I shall forward this to you.  Beccy Turner will be visiting the school with Charley Bear on 20th September to talk to the children about where their harvest contributions will go.

Attached to this letter is an information form.  Please could you complete this and return it to your child’s class teacher so that we can ensure that all emergency contact details are up to date.  Thank you.

A scary thought, but looking forward to Christmas Mrs Dixon has started to take orders for our school Christmas Puddings.  These come with our school logo and make wonderful Christmas gifts (they are also absolutely delicious!) and the more that you order, the more funds will be donated to the FOPS fund.  Keep your eyes peeled for the order form or contact Mrs Dixon for more details.

We have a very busy time ahead us so I would like to draw your attention to the dates at the end of this letter, the details of which you will also be able to find on the calendar on our school website.

I hope that we will have a little more summer weather so that we can enjoy using our wonderful grounds for chats, picnics and playing but in the meantime if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

With very best wishes
